Traveling to Orlando for a cheer, football, or dance competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex? You’re not alone! Every year, thousands of families make the trip for youth sports events and try to squeeze in a little Disney magic while they’re at it. The good news is with the right plan, you can do both and still enjoy it. I LOVE sharing my fave Disney travel sports tips…
Here’s how to make the most of limited park time, where to eat near the complex, and how to turn your sports trip into an unforgettable Disney vacation.
Know Your Schedule Before You Go
This sounds obvious, but it’s everything. If you’re waiting on a tentative practice or game schedule, hold off on locking in too many reservations. Once the finalized itinerary drops, map out your free blocks. You don’t want to spend your only off-day sprinting between parks because you didn’t realize a game got moved.
Tip: If your athlete is done early in the day, you’ll likely have a great window for evening park time. Just make sure to account for travel time and any needed rest (those 6 a.m. call times hit hard).
Pick the Right Park for the Time You Have
Let’s say you’ve only got half a day, make it count.
- Magic Kingdom is great for iconic experiences and classic rides, but can be overwhelming if you’re short on time. Prioritize this one if you’ve got a full day off or a late start the next day.
- Hollywood Studios is ideal for a quick hit of thrill. With a solid Genie+ strategy, you can knock out Tower of Terror, Rise of the Resistance, and a show or two in a few hours. This is also the park closest to the sports complex!
- EPCOT is perfect for winding down. Enjoy a relaxing dinner, catch the fireworks, and stroll around the World Showcase, even if you only have a few hours.
- Animal Kingdom has an early close time, so it’s better for mornings or full-day adventures.
Whatever you choose, plan based on how much time you really have. Don’t try to park hop with just a 5-hour window.
Stay Close, But Strategically
If your competition is at ESPN Wide World of Sports, staying at one of the All-Star Resorts (All-Star Sports, All-Star Music, or All-Star Movies) puts you super close to the action. They’re also budget-friendly, and many teams choose to stay together here.
Looking for a balance of convenience and comfort? Pop Century and Art of Animation are close by and offer a bit more theming and access to the Disney Skyliner, which connects you to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.
Dining Around the Sports Complex
Eating near ESPN Wide World of Sports doesn’t have to mean settling for concessions all weekend.
Here are a few quick, nearby spots:
- Everything Pop Dining at Pop Century – perfect for families needing variety (and refillable drinks)
- Landscape of Flavors at Art of Animation – known for more creative options and kid-friendly picks
- Disney Springs – just a short drive away and loaded with dining options that range from fast-casual to sit-down meals (great for celebrating post-competition!)
Pro tip: Mobile order in the My Disney Experience app saves serious time, especially when the team is hungry now.
Don’t Skip the Magic, Even If It’s Short
Even if you only have one park evening, it’s still worth going. Catch a nighttime show like Happily Ever After at Magic Kingdom or Fantasmic! at Hollywood Studios. Book a character meal for the non-competition day. Ride one big ride and grab a Mickey-shaped treat.
What matters most is making those little memories, seeing your child light up, snapping a quick castle photo, or collapsing into laughter at the end of a long day.
Make Genie+ Work for You
With limited time in the parks, Genie+ can be your best friend. Prioritize rides with historically long waits (like Slinky Dog Dash, Peter Pan’s Flight, or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure). Use mobile order for meals, and don’t forget to check showtimes for parades and performances.
