Before you settle on a hotel that looks “close enough,” let’s talk about the real difference between staying on property vs. off-site, and why it matters more than you think.

Why Universal Orlando Hotels Are Worth Considering

If you’re planning more than one park day, staying at a Universal Orlando hotel can seriously level up your experience. One of the biggest perks? Early Park Admission (EPA). Guests at all Universal Orlando hotels get early access, up to one hour before official park opening, to select attractions at Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay (usually 30 minutes early). And as of recently, (May 23, 2025), that includes early access to Epic Universe too!

This extra time in the parks can make a huge difference, especially when it comes to popular areas like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or Volcano Bay’s limited-capacity attractions.

Just note: if you’re staying at a Universal partner hotel (like Drury Inn or Rosen Inn), you only get EPA if you book a full vacation package directly through Universal or Your Fairytale Vacation. So if early access is important to you, booking through an authorized partner like Your Fairytale Vacation, is the way to go.

If you stay at a Premier hotel (like Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific, or Loews Portofino Bay), you’ll also get a free Universal Express Unlimited pass for each guest in your room. That alone can save you hundreds and dramatically cut your wait times.

Tip: If your athlete is done early in the day, you’ll likely have a great window for evening park time. Just make sure to account for travel time and any needed rest (those 6 a.m. call times hit hard).

Let’s say you’ve only got half a day, make it count.

• Magic Kingdom is great for iconic experiences and classic rides, but can be overwhelming if you’re short on time. Prioritize this one if you’ve got a full day off or a late start the next day.
  
• Hollywood Studios is ideal for a quick hit of thrill. With a solid Genie+ strategy, you can knock out Tower of Terror, Rise of the Resistance, and a show or two in a few hours. This is also the park closest to the sports complex!

Looking for a balance of convenience and comfort? Pop Century and Art of Animation are close by and offer a bit more theming and access to the Disney Skyliner, which connects you to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.

Eating near ESPN Wide World of Sports doesn’t have to mean settling for concessions all weekend.

Universal keeps it simple. You can buy an Express Pass (regular or unlimited), and it lets you skip the regular lines at most rides with no need to book times or plan ahead. You just show up at the Express entrance and hop in line.

It’s valid at both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, and if you get the unlimited version, you can ride your favorite attractions as many times as you want, skipping the line every time. 

Express Pass is also valid at the brand-new park, Epic Universe, but they only offer the regular version of it at this time.

– Works at almost every ride, including big ones like VelociCoaster and Spider-Man
– Unlimited option = serious value for coaster lovers and thrill seekers

I was lucky enough to snag a sneak peek at Epic Universe, and let me tell you… it’s every bit as incredible as people are saying. Walking around, I kept thinking, this is going to blow people’s minds. The lands are massive, and the theming is insane. Honestly, I was totally geeking out seeing it all come to life.

But as amazing as it is, visiting a brand-new park right when it opens definitely has its ups and downs. Since I got an early look, I want to share some real talk about what to expect if you’re thinking of going as soon as the gates open.

Why It’s Awesome to Be One of the First

There’s something seriously cool about being one of the first people to step foot inside a new theme park. You’re part of that first wave of visitors, you get to soak it all in before the rest of the world does, and yes, you’ll have the best bragging rights when you post your pics.

I got to see the park from the Helios Grand Hotel overlook, and WOW. Seeing the entire park laid out from up there was just… next-level. And of course, Super Nintendo World and the new Wizarding World areas are going to be huge draws. It’s totally immersive and honestly, I didn’t want to leave.

The Downside to Going Early

Here’s where I keep it real. Visiting a brand-new park early on? It’s exciting, but it also comes with some headaches.

The crowds are going to be intense, everyone’s dying to get in… and the team is still working out the kinks. You might hit longer wait times, tech glitches and potential ride breakdowns, or rides and restaurants still smoothing things out. I definitely noticed that while the vibe was awesome, there’s still a lot to fine-tune before things run 100% smoothly.

And let’s not forget, it’s in Florida. Hot, humid, sometimes extremely rainy, and packed with people… Not exactly a dream day for everyone.

So… Should You Go Right Away?

If you’re the kind of person who loves being part of the opening buzz, and you don’t mind dealing with the early hiccups, you’re going to have an epic time no matter what. But if you’re like me and want a bit more breathing room (and a little less chaos), I’d honestly wait a few months.

So my VERY Pro Tip is ….October or later. The weather’s cooler, the crowds settle a bit, and by then, the park will have worked out most of those first-month growing pains.
