Just because you’ve got littles in tow doesn’t mean you have to skip the thrill rides!
Disney’s Rider Switch is the not-so-secret parenting hack that lets you ride without double the wait. Perfect for families with toddlers, babies, or anyone who’s not quite ready for high-speed drops and coaster loops, Rider Swap makes sure both adults still get their turn on the big attractions, while someone stays back with the little ones.
This feature is available at both Disneyland and Disney World, and it can completely transform your park experience. You don’t have to skip Space Mountain, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, or Expedition Everest just because you’re traveling with a toddler. Rider Switch gives you flexibility, efficiency, and a more balanced day in the parks.
How Does Rider Switch Work?
It’s a simple process, but it’s important to do it right. When you arrive at a ride that offers Rider Switch, head to the Cast Member at the entrance and let them know you’d like to use Rider Switch. One adult stays with the non-riding child while the rest of the party rides. Once the first group is done, the waiting adult (and up to two additional guests) can ride with little to no wait.
This second group will either be given a Lightning Lane return window or escorted through the Lightning Lane immediately, depending on the attraction. Not only does this mean less waiting, it also means more bonding opportunities, siblings or friends can ride again with the second adult, creating double the memories for them, too.
Which Rides Offer Rider Switch?
Not every attraction uses the Rider Switch system, but all major thrill rides and height-restricted attractions do. This includes popular rides like:
- TRON Lightcycle / Run
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Flight of Passage
- Expedition Everest
- Space Mountain
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- Rise of the Resistance
It’s also used for some non-thrill but height-restricted attractions, like Soarin’ or Test Track. Always check with a Cast Member when in doubt, they’ll let you know if the ride is eligible and guide you through the process.
Rider Switch + Lightning Lane = Even More Efficient
You can combine Rider Switch with Lightning Lane (via Genie+) or Individual Lightning Lane purchases to really streamline your day. For example, if Parent A purchases a Lightning Lane for a ride, Parent B can still use Rider Switch to ride it afterward without needing their own Lightning Lane reservation.
This is especially helpful if you’re working with a tight Genie+ budget or just want to prioritize key experiences. You’ll get more done, wait in fewer lines, and still make sure everyone in the family has their turn on the must-do rides.
Tips to Make the Most of Rider Switch
While Rider Switch is easy to use, a few smart strategies can help you get the most from it:
- Plan your day with Rider Switch in mind. Use the time the first group is riding to do a snack break, bathroom trip, or rider distraction (like playgrounds or character spotting).
- Let older kids double up. If you have older kids who love thrills, they can ride once with Parent A and then again with Parent B. Double the fun for them, less boredom for everyone else.
- Know the height requirements. Having a list of what your little one can’t ride helps you plan ahead and avoid mid-line disappointment.
It’s also worth noting that not all Cast Members explain the process in the same way, so if you’re unsure or need help, just ask. They’re happy to walk you through it and make sure your family is set up for a great experience.
Why It’s a Must-Know for Families
Rider Switch is one of those lesser-known Disney features that makes a huge difference, especially for first-time visitors or families navigating the parks with young kids. It lets parents enjoy the full Disney experience without sacrificing thrill rides or feeling like they’re missing out. And it helps older kids stay entertained by riding again with each parent.
If you’ve got thrill seekers in your family and little ones in tow, this system is your best friend.
